SCOTT FREE!

That was always my story but after fitting a Scottoiler to my new VFR750 it was still on its original chain and only adjusted once when I sold it with 18,000 miles on the clock. Now my VFR800 has had one fitted from new, has 8,000 miles on the clock and the chain still looks like new! The device is simple to fit and use, and will clean and oil your chain as you ride, you never need to buy another can of aerosol grease or clean your chain again.

FITTING

First choose your model:

Open the box and try not to panic when you see a wealth of parts, Scottoiler want to make sure you have various options for fitting the unit to your bike from superglued holders to cable ties. Next, read the instructions, then, where to fit? Well if it is the touring kit place it behind the numberplate. The universal kit gives you a wealth of options, under the seat, vertical or nearly horizontal (the unit only needs a slight down camber to work).

Next run the vacuum connection to the carbs/injector area. Take it along the frame or cable run, make sure it is clear of exhaust pipes and will not get trapped. Any bike with more than one carb should have balancing connectors, usually it is a case of removing a blanking cap and push on the unit connector. Injector bikes usually have vacuum pipes, identify these, choose one and tee in the unit connector, bikes with vacuum operated fuel taps (these have a "prime" tap position) have a vacuum hose (thinner than the fuel pipe, do not mix them up!) Again cut and tee in the unit. Bikes with only one carb require you to drill into the stub that joins the carb to the cylinder head (remove the carb so you can clean the swarf out after), screw in the connector supplied and push on the vacuum connector.

Next the delivery pipe. Run this from the unit along the subframe to the swinging arm pivot point (this cuts out the need for lots of slack in the pipe for suspension travel). Now along the swinging arm and to the 6 o'clock position of the rear sprocket (anywhere else, such as midway along the chain run, and I have seen dealers fit them here, will send oil off to the four winds and certainly not on the chain). As with the vacuum pipe, make sure it will not be trapped, or damaged by exhaust pipes, ensure there is enough slack to cope with suspension travel and secure the run using the superglued holders or cable ties.

Now fill and prime the unit, set the flow rate to 1-2 drops per minute at tickover and ride your bike away confident that the unit will clean and oil your chain and probably at least double its life. If you see oil spray on your tyre sidewall reduce the flow, (it is very unlikely to ever get on the tyre tread). In warm weather you may need to turn the flow down slightly, in colder or wetter weather turn it up to ensure the chain is well oiled for protection from rain or road salt.

If you have a single sided swinging arm ask your supplier to provide the free adapter. If you own a fuel injected Triumph, Yamaha Thunderace, Suzuki GSX600F or 750F you may also need a special part from Scottoiler so give them a call. Oh, and if you do not feel that confident about fitting the unit or are stuck then call Scottoiler on 0141 955 1100 and ask for technical support or e-mail technical@scottoiler.com. They will talk you through the problem or post or e-mail you pictures of the unit fitted to a bike similar to yours.

A fellow biker told me that his unit left oil on the floor when it had stood a while, if this is the case the unit is faulty and needs replacing. One of the items that can cause this sort of damage or even a blockage is by using old engine oil. Avoid using this and use Scottoil only. By the way, if you thought a Scottoiler would reduce power to your machine it won't.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

Scottoiler are now developing a twin injector system with the aim of coating both sides of the chain simultaneously. This is the latest in a series of ongoing developments by the Company. If the twin injector proves successful then this will be put on the market. REMEMBER, You read it here first! If you intend to treat your bike and purchase a Scottoiler then why not order direct from the manufacturer?

LATE UPDATE

My VFR800i has been running a two year old touring kit that was transferred from my VFR750. Scottoiler sent me the 50cc bottle to change over from the one on my current kit to allow a comparison with the older model. Changes are subtle but show how improvements are an ongoing project. The current RMV (the 50cc bottle) now has numbers around the top to allow a definite drip setting to be made rather than the old scale markings. It is also easier to prime once fitted. The company has also found that the filler plug on the older touring kits (not applicable to the 50cc kit) can sometimes shrink with age by upto 8%. This can allow in water to the 400cc holder or stop it siphoning.

If this has happened to yours then call Scottoiler for a free replacement. It is also worth noting that if any part of your Scottoiler needs replacing it can be ordered from them direct at very reasonable cost, no need to waste money buying a complete new kit.
