Autocom Intercom Systems
I purchased the Autocom Pro M1 System last year and have been using it for motorcycle training and all the other bits and bobs that it does. The system consists of the 'Goodie' box that does all the work, you then need the boom microphone and extension leads if required. I am using Icom Radios for bike to bike work so it was good news when I found that this system can run the radio from the bike electrics instead of the radios battery pack This is done by another lead that comes directly from the main unit with a small extension lead that connects to the radio. It took about 30 minutes to fit onto the bike, the main unit sitting nicely at the rear of the ST1100 by the light cluster.
The System was fitted quite easily by following the instructions, and the Radio Lead was plumbed through into the left hand fairing pocket, and the phone lead went to the right hand fairing pocket. The system is designed to run bike to bike with the necessary radios of course, rider to pillion, music and a digital phone. Well, once set up, this system is excellent.
From the training side, I have found that the transmissions to the trainee are spot on. You can hear your voice through your own headset so you can tell all is working okay. If the VOX drops out whilst you are talking you are instantly aware, so you can repeat the instruction again. I must add that you can actually adjust the VOX settings to suit your own needs. With my radio system set up to run from the bike, I dont have to worry about the radio battery going flat half way through the day. If I get a little bored, I can always switch the radio or tape player on to pass the time! This does not affect the transmissions to the trainee, and they are unaware what you are listening to. If I get an incoming phone call on the mobile, the system is designed to make this a priority, so you can answer the call and your trainee is still non the wiser. Of course, it is a little difficult to make calls whilst on the move, in fact it is downright dangerous for obvious reasons, but this is where the speed dialling facility comes into it's own if your mobile phone has this feature.
Since using the system to it's full capabilities, I have found that when listening to music I dont actually need to wear earplugs, in fact it is like sitting in front of your home stereo system. I use the Nolan Xlite helmets which I have found good for noise reduction anyway (Personal choice of course). The system is good up to speeds into three figures, that being 70.5 MPH on a dual carriageway of course, and no speech quality is lost. Phone quality is second to none, and you can take an incoming call at any speed with no loss in quality. With the Auto Answer feature of the mobile phone switched on, it rings twice in the headset and answers automatically.
I could go on for quite some time about this but you would only get bored. So, to wrap things up, I can recommend this system to anyone that is in the market for purchasing a first class intercom set up, but be prepared to pay a little more, remember the old saying "You Get What You Pay For". If you are doing motorcycle training or serious touring then this is the system for you.
